When your business depends on the efficient provision and maintenance of data on customers,
products and services and you need to maximize your investment in IT systems, we can help
you to choose the most appropriate client server platform and then build and deploy
the bespoke IT solution.
Thin client browser based intranet applications
A thin client is not quite as feature rich as a thick client solution (see below),
however by harnessing the power of internet technology, a browser based intranet
application has the following benefits over a thick client approach: -
- Reduction of overall IT costs
- Reduction of the resource requirements needed within the clients workstation
- Easier to deploy and maintain
- Robust and scalable
When asked by a high street bank, with a very secure desktop access policy, to provide a
financial services compliance application for over 100 hundred staff in five locations
we recommended and deployed a browser based thin client intranet solution. Written in
ASP.net and accessing a SQL Server database with secure access, the application met all
business requirements including complex MI reports served via Crystal Reports. All this
via a simple web browser – accessible anywhere within the client’s Intranet.
Thick client desktop applications
A thick client application is the more traditional approach: -
- Feature rich font-end
- Harnesses the full computing power of the workstation
- Business logic and data validation can hook into other software systems available on the client’s workstation
- Reduces network traffic and demand on server platforms
We used this approach for one of our projects to provide a complex management information
system for a major retailer’s contact centre. Written in VB6 the application was data-driven
by a SQL Server database and provided reporting capabilities using Crystal Reports. Aimed
towards a very restricted audience, the solution utilized the client’s local processing power
and limited the impact on an already restricted network structure.
